    Belangrijke specificaties zijn onder andere de DOT-classificatie (bijv. DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5.1), het kookpunt, de viscositeit en de compatibiliteit met het remsysteem. Het moet voldoen aan de eisen van de fabrikant om de veiligheid en prestaties te garanderen.


    Remvloeistof moet worden vervangen met tussenpozen die door de autofabrikant worden aanbevolen, doorgaans elke 1-2 jaar. Tekenen van verminderde remprestaties of vochtophoping zijn onder andere.
