    Een brandstoffilter is een onderdeel van het brandstofsysteem dat vuil, roest en andere verontreinigingen uit de brandstof verwijdert voordat deze de motor bereikt. De functie ervan is om een schone brandstoftoevoer te garanderen, de injectoren en andere gevoelige onderdelen te beschermen en tegelijkertijd een efficiënte verbranding en optimale motorprestaties te behouden.


    Belangrijke specificaties zijn onder andere de filtratie-efficiëntie (micronwaarde), de doorstroomcapaciteit, de filterafmetingen en de compatibiliteit met benzine- of dieselsystemen. Brandstoffilters worden doorgaans gemaakt van hoogwaardig papier of synthetisch materiaal dat is ontworpen om fijne deeltjes op te vangen en tegelijkertijd voldoende brandstofdoorvoer mogelijk te maken. Ze moeten bestand zijn tegen de brandstofdruk en temperaturen die doorgaans variëren van -30 °C tot +120 °C.


    Vervanging is noodzakelijk bij regelmatige onderhoudsbeurten of wanneer er tekenen optreden zoals verminderde motorprestaties, startproblemen of vervuiling van het brandstofsysteem. Een verstopt brandstoffilter kan de brandstoftoevoer belemmeren en leiden tot een slechte werking van de motor of schade aan onderdelen van het brandstofsysteem.
