    Belangrijke specificaties zijn onder andere de bedrijfsspanning (doorgaans 12V), de uitgangsspanning (vaak tot 30-40 kV), het ontwerp van de bobine (enkelvoudig, dubbel of bobine-op-stekker), het type connector en de montageconfiguratie. Ontstekingsbobines moeten bestand zijn tegen hoge temperaturen (meestal -40°C tot +150°C), trillingen en elektrische belasting, terwijl ze een constante vonkenergie en nauwkeurige timing leveren.


    Vervanging is nodig wanneer de bobine defect raakt of zwakker wordt. Veelvoorkomende symptomen zijn onder andere een haperende motor, een onregelmatig stationair toerental, verminderd vermogen, een hoger brandstofverbruik, startproblemen of een brandend motorstoringslampje. Foutcodes met betrekking tot de ontsteking of specifieke cilinders duiden vaak op een defecte bobine.
