    Een katalysator is een onderdeel van het uitlaatsysteem dat de schadelijke uitstoot van de motor vermindert. De functie ervan is het omzetten van giftige gassen zoals koolmonoxide (CO), koolwaterstoffen (HC) en stikstofoxiden (NOx) in minder schadelijke stoffen zoals kooldioxide (CO₂), waterdamp en stikstof.

    Belangrijke specificaties zijn onder andere het type substraat (keramisch of metaal), de katalysatorcoating, de diameter van de inlaat en uitlaat, de naleving van de emissienormen en de compatibiliteit met het voertuig. Het moet bestand zijn tegen hoge temperaturen en een goede uitlaatgasstroom garanderen.
